About Measles

Measles is a highly contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person. It is spread through coughing and sneezing. Infected people can spread the virus to others from four days before to four days after rash appears.

Signs and symptoms
Measles typically begins with high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes. Rash starts three to four days after the symptoms begin. Red spots start on the face at the hairline and spread down to the neck, trunk, arms, legs and feet.

The disease can be serious especially for children younger than 5 years of age.

Common complications are ear infections and diarrhea.

Severe complications are pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). As many as one out of twenty children with measles can get pneumonia, about one in thousand children with measles can develop encephalitis, that can lead to serious neurological complications.

The only way to prevent illness is immunization with MMR vaccine. First dose is given 12 through 15 months of age, second 4 to 6 years of age.

What about homeopathy
Can be helpful in treatment symptoms of the illness.

Belladonna, Aconitum, Bryonia , Ferrum phosphoricum for fever.

Pulsatilla, Belladonna for rash
Bryonia , Spongia for cough
Alium cepa, Euphrasia for conjunctivitis.

Morbillinum is a homeopathic medication produced from the throat secretions from the patients infected with the measles. Therapeutic experience shows that the medicine shortens the progression of the illness and reduces the complications. Can be give weekly during measles outbreak. Unfortunately this type of prevention can’t replace vaccination.
